The orange river lily is a widely distributed species with large candy striped flowers, pollinated by nocturnal hawkmoths. Used in traditional medicine to relieve backache, leaf sap is used for earache. They are long-lived, hardy garden plants that go dormant in winter, although in warmer climates they can remain evergreen. Used in traditional medicine to treat colds, rheumatism, varicose veins, reduce swelling and as poultices for septic wounds. Also used to ensure easy delivery in pregnancy and to stimulate breast milk. It is planted around houses to protect the home from evil.
