Watsonia pillansii, known as Pillans’ Watsonia or Beatrice Watsonia, is a robust, evergreen, clump-forming perennial native to South Africa that grows up to 1.5m tall. It features pale green, slightly twisted strap-like leaves and produces spikes of 20 to 35 bright tubular flowers in summer, mainly December to January. The plant thrives in full sun with well-drained, compost-rich soil that is kept moist but not waterlogged, tolerating some semi-shade. It is frost hardy and attracts nectar-feeding birds. Watsonia pillansii is popular for garden borders, mass planting, soil retention on slopes, and as a striking cut flower.
