Coastal West Cape
Ferraria crispa
Iridaceae
Ferraria crispa are a very intriguing species, with intricate frilly velvey-textured flowers and attractive blue-green sword shaped leaves. The overall bloom time can extend to a month long but individual flowers only last one day. Interestingly, the flowers scent can vary vastly, from sweet vanilla that attracts butterflies and birds to some that have more of a carrion scent to attract flies that pollinate them. They grow best in full sun in a well-drained sandy medium where the soil stays damp through the growing season. They should be kept dry in the summer dormant period.
